THE National Museum of Flight will be open seven days a week from tomorrow (Friday) with a busy new season of events.

The East Fortune museum is the UK’s best preserved Second World War era airfield and includes two historic hangars filled with displays that tell the story of aviation, as well as housing the legendary Spitfire.

The packed schedule will showcase a wide variety of events focussed on military history and aviation.

‘Make Do and Mend’, supported by the People’s Postcode Lottery, will run from April 19 to 22 and showcase the ingenuity of the 1940s, displaying how surplus RAF items were repurposed in a number of creative ways.

On Sunday, May 8, also supported by the People’s Postcode Lottery, ‘Dig for Victory’ will show visitors how people cooked and grew their own food and coped with rationing in wartime Britain.

On May 28 and 29, to mark the 40th anniversary of the Falklands War, a curator and RAF veterans will be giving talks about the war and a photographic exhibit of the role of the Parachute Regiment will take place.

Awesome Bricks LEGO

One of the museum’s most popular shows, the Awesome Bricks LEGO event, returns on June 18 and 19.

It will feature spectacular LEGO creations and a speed building challenge, with tickets going on sale in mid-April.

Steve McLean, general manager, said: “The National Museum of Flight’s atmospheric East Fortune home is the UK’s best-preserved Second World War airfield and our forthcoming events programme will help visitors to step back in time and imagine the lives of those who lived here during the war.

“Elsewhere on site, they will be able to explore our wonderful collections and learn about our rich aviation history and the people and aircraft involved in it.

“We’re proud to be one of Europe’s major aviation museums and look forward to welcoming visitors as we resume seven-day opening for the new season.”
