AN OPPORTUNITY is on offer to learn how to ring the bells at an historic church.

A six-week, bell-ringing basics course is being held from February 26 at St Mary’s Parish Church.

The bells at the Haddington church were installed in 1999 in preparation for the millennium celebrations.

Now, the Haddington Society of Change Ringers is on the lookout for new members.

Sally Thomas, ringing master, said: “Most people can learn to become a bell ringer.

“You need to be fit enough to climb the 68 steps up the church tower but don’t need to be particularly strong.

“We teach adults and young people, from the age of about 12 years.

“Learning to ring bells can take several weeks or months. The bell-ringing basics course is designed to give new recruits six consecutive weeks of focused tuition on Saturday mornings to help fast-track their learning.

“After the six-week course, we hope that the new recruits will want to continue learning and join our weekly practice on a Friday evening.”

The course is open to all and not just members of the church.

It can also be part of a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme.
