A BOOK looking back at a decade of Dunbar’s history is being reprinted after proving a great success.

Dr James Herring’s book Dunbar in the 1950s: Rationing, housing, entertainment, shops and shopping was published in February 2020.

Now the 500 copies have been sold, another run is being published by Dunbar and District History Society (DDHS), with all profits from the book going to the community group.

Gordon Easingwood, chairman of DDHS, told the Courier: “When the book first came out, we thought that if it sold about 250 in the first two years it would wash its face.

“However, it seems to have struck a chord with people in Dunbar and people from Dunbar across the world.”

The book is mainly based on interviews with people who grew up in the town in the 1950s. Dr Herring was delighted with the success of the book and thanked both Dunbar Post Office and Knox’s Newsagents, with more than 200 copies sold between them.

The author said: “I talked to people still in Dunbar but many now living across the UK and in countries such as Australia and New Zealand.

“My oldest interviewee was 95 years old, with others in their 70s.

“When writing the book, the Courier published an article which asked people if they would be prepared to be interviewed and I got a great response.”

The book, which costs £10, is available in local outlets and online at dun barinthe1950s.wordpress.com
