A HISTORIC estate in Musselburgh was the target of "destruction" by "mindless" vandals this week.

Over 25 panes of historic glass, some of which was originally installed when the Palladian-style house was built in 1696, were shattered by vandals on January 2 and 4.

A post published by Newhailes House and Gardens read: "We are really sad to report that on January 2 and 4, Newhailes House suffered at the hands of some mindless vandals.

"Over 25 panes of historic glass, some of which was original, have been smashed.

"The cost to our charity of repairing this damage is vast as is the cost of the additional security we are putting in place until our CCTV is installed."

Newhailes, which is run by the National Trust for Scotland, has asked regular visitors or anyone with information to contact Police Scotland quoting the reference number 798.

A number of Facebook users and visitors expressed their sadness over the targeted vandalism.

One social media user said: "So sorry to hear about this. Heart breaking for everyone who cares for this beautiful house."

Another added: "Words fail me that these disgusting apologies for humans can get away with this. I do hope someone somewhere can help. So sad that this has happened."
