I am someone who pays standard taxes like the majority in Scotland.

Despite the SNP saying we are a “wealthy nation in waiting”, they fail to address paying for your care fairly in old age.

The good news for the SNP is the Conservatives, Labour, Greens and Liberal Democrats have also shied away from the same topic for well over 40 years.

As a starting point, can I suggest the following:

If the total annual care bill for the Scottish Nation is £xxx then raise all the money required through the many taxes (not just PAYE) implemented in Scotland by £xxx per annum.

I am aware not all taxes are collected in Scotland, but there is also the Barnett formula to consider implementing for this purpose.

That way, if everyone capable pays their share, it will result in all taxes being raised, and in theory hopefully no one will have to sell their home if they go into care. Also, those not capable of contributing will continue to receive nearly free care.

Yes, the above may need some fine tuning, but the recent alternative passed at Westminster is another whitewash and that is me being kind.

So with elections/referendum looming, can MPs, councillors, Scottish Office staff etc be truthful and say if they will abolish people having to sell their homes to receive appropriate care when needed?

Or can they just be upfront and say that, with all their expertise available, sending someone to the moon is easier and the topic is insurmountable during the 21st century.

Therefore, voters will just have to bite the bullet and get on with life.

I am not optimistic in expecting any decent reply because what I am asking appears to not be an election winner, or it would have been top of the manifestos in 1980s.

I rest my case and ‘don’t bring me problems, bring me solutions’ is the message to all political parties north of the Border.
