NO TRAINS are running in East Lothian for the rest of today due to red weather warning in place for extremely strong winds.

The Met Office has issued its most serious red 'take action' warning covering the period between 3pm today and 2am tomorrow (Saturday), as it warns of a potential danger to life due to the extremely strong winds being brought to the county by Storm Arwen.

ScotRail has announced that as a result of the strong winds, the North Berwick and Dunbar lines will remain closed this afternoon and evening.

The Dunbar line has already closed, while the last trains to run from Edinburgh to North Berwick and from North Berwick to Edinburgh are the 15.41 Edinburgh and 16.24 respectively.

Tickets will be accepted on Lothian Buses and Borders Buses, ScotRail says.

Meanwhile, LNER is advising people not to travel on its trains at all this weekend due to the storm disruption.

LNER is encouraging any customers booked to travel from today (Friday) until the end of service on Sunday to defer their travel if possible.

Tickets will be valid on LNER services on the following dates on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Network Rail has imposed emergency speed restrictions as the extreme weather conditions begin to impact the East Coast route.

The East Coast route north of Berwick-upon-Tweed, including the whole of the section passing through East Lothian, will be closed to services from 5pm today. Further closures as a result of the extreme weather are possible elsewhere on the East Coast route.

Services that can operate face extended journey times, and short notice delays, and cancellations are expected.

The train line closure comes as the A1 has been closed to all high-sided vehicles ahead of a possible full closure later this afternoon, while police have advised people not to drive "under any circumstances" while the red warning remains in effect.
