NEARLY 2,000 visitors flocked to an action-packed event last weekend marking the Battle of Prestonpans.

The Prestonpans Re-enactment Weekend, hosted by the Battle of Prestonpans Heritage Trust 1745, was hailed a roaring success when it took place at the Greenhills on Saturday and Sunday.

The Battle of Prestonpans saw a Jacobite army led by Bonnie Prince Charlie achieve a dramatic victory over the Redcoat army loyal to the Hanoverian king George II, which was led by Sir John Cope.

The battle took place in fields between Prestonpans, Tranent and Cockenzie and Port Seton on September 21, 1745.

The event welcomed re-enactors from across the world and even demonstrated the impact of artillery on charging clansmen.

Dr Arran Johnston, of the battle trust, said: “We were delighted to welcome almost 2,000 visitors and friends. It was wonderful to bring together re-enactors to celebrate the cultural legacy of the battle and recreate the battle camps for the Redcoat army and Jacobite army for visitors to learn what life was like for those living in 1745.

“We had lots of support, with online ticket sales higher than ever. Saturday was our busiest day we have had.

“Our supporters were able to view our livestream videos on Facebook, with over 8,000 views.”
