RESPITE centre Leuchie House received a visit from South Scotland MSP Craig Hoy recently, with discussions held on the proposed national care service plan.

Mr Hoy, who is also shadow Scottish care minister, went along to the charity, on the outskirts of North Berwick.

Leuchie House provides respite breaks for individuals and families affected by long-term physical and neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s, motor neurone disease and those living with the effects of stroke and spinal injuries.

It is currently undergoing extensive renovations to extend its guest capacity and is also pioneering the use of new and enabling technology to assist with respite and social care needs.

Mr Hoy met with the charity’s chief executive Mark Bevan during his visit and spoke with staff, volunteers and guests.

Mr Hoy said: “It was excellent to find out how the staff at Leuchie House adapted during the Covid crisis and to see first-hand how it remobilised following the peak of the pandemic.

“Leuchie House provides expert respite care for guests from across the country and I look forward to seeing its new facilities opening this month.

“I also warmly welcome its plans for further expansion as a centre for excellence for the research and use of new technologies to enhance the quality of life for those suffering from long-term physical conditions.”

Mr Hoy and Mr Bevan also discussed the proposed plan for a national care service and the impact it could have on respite care and the future recruitment and retention of staff in the social care sector in East Lothian.
