PLANS are being drawn up for “a major revitalisation” of a village hall which dates back more than 100 years.

Innerwick Parish Welfare Association (IPWA) has received money from the Crystal Rig windfarm funds, which are administered by East Lammermuir Community Council.

Now, the IPWA is looking at how the hall can be transformed, and has launched a community consultation.

Elisabeth Wilson, IPWA vice-chair, was clear that the process was essential.

She said: “We need to know what people want.

“Only then can we plan and raise the funds that will give the area the best community amenity possible.”

Awareness-raising posters have been put up throughout the village, as well as a colourful banner at the hall.

In the meantime, leaflets and a paper survey have been sent out in Innerwick and to the surrounding hamlets of Elmscleugh, Thurston, Hunter Steading, Crowhill, Thornton, Skateraw and Thorntonloch to attract as many views as possible.

Once IPWA has an idea of the majority vision, it will instruct Edinburgh firm Groves-Raines Architects to combine the survey findings and present the community with a range of costed options for the way forward.

From there, a second survey outlining the pros and cons of each option will be launched, with members of the public invited to state their preferences.

Julia Harrison, who is a member of East Lammermuir Community Council, was keen for people to take part in the exercise. She said: “It is really exciting since we really don’t know what the outcome will be.

“We do know that whatever emerges will house the best in sustainable thinking and be a highly desirable venue for a revitalised programme of activities and events.”
