THE former Marine Hotel staff accommodation building in North Berwick has been put up for sale.

Allied Surveyors Scotland has been appointed to sell the building, on the town’s Dirleton Avenue.

At 9,108 square feet, the property occupies a half-acre site and is less than one mile from the town centre.

It was previously known as the Golf Hotel until about 2006.

With 18 bedrooms over four storeys, it was once home to staff who worked at the Marine Hotel.

The Courier has asked the new hotel owner where staff will live once the B-listed building reopens, and when the property was last used by staff.

The Marine Hotel, on the town's Cromwell Road, was bought by Chicago-based company AJ Capital Partners from Macdonald Hotels in February last year.

It closed in January and is currently undergoing a major refurbishment, with work due to be completed and the hotel to reopen by June.

Once complete, the new-look hotel will be home to about 92 bedrooms and will see its restaurant and bar revamped, with new flooring and a new lobby area among some of the changes proposed.

The accommodation building is said to be surplus to requirements as AJ Capital is moving away from providing staff accommodation.

It has been placed on the market at offers over £1.353million.

Iain Mercer, Allied Surveyors’ director of commercial agency (east), said: “This is a prime development opportunity on the main road leading into one of Scotland’s most sought-after coastal towns.

“We expect high levels of demand from residential developers in particular, but other uses may also be viable.”

Bruno De Schuyter, the hotel’s manager, said: "The building has been put on the market as it no longer fits its initial purpose. As we approach the re-opening of the hotel this summer our commitment is to first and foremost provide employment opportunities to people living in our local area, who often have their own accommodations."
