FEARS have been raised that a Preston Lodge High School pupil may never walk again after he was diagnosed with leukaemia.

Aidan Hogg, 15, was taken to hospital last Thursday before doctors broke the shock news to his mum Emma Davidson and dad Mark Hogg.

His mum said: “I struggle with bad news. They said the worst possible case is he might never be able to walk again, which is obviously devastating.”

The keen Rangers fan, who lives in Musselburgh, had been feeling unwell towards the end of last month and complaining of a sore back.

Emma said: “He had started complaining that he was constipated and he had a really sore back.

“He had thought he had pulled a muscle in his back and I was massaging him.

“Over the week and last weekend he felt a bit better.

“On the Monday (March 1), I decided to take him to the GP and they prescribed him a laxative and also thought he had a kidney infection. On the Monday night, he never slept and Tuesday it was the same.

“On Thursday, at about 1.30am, he said he did not feel well and felt like his legs had pins and needles.

“About 2.30am or nearer 3am, he said his legs felt like jelly and he was struggling to walk.”

It was at that point that Aidan was taken to Edinburgh’s Royal Hospital for Sick Children.

Doctors told the family that Aidan, who has brothers Ryan (20), Keegan (10) and 23-month-old Robbie, as well as Shea (nine) and Frankie (seven), had two masses on his spinal cord.

Aidan, who previously lived on Prestonpans’ North Bank Road, is undergoing chemotherapy and is likely to undergo radiotherapy treatment as well, with the possibility of needing a bone marrow transplant.

Trudie Murphy, who Emma previously raised money for when she was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumour, set up an online fundraising appeal to help the family.

Already, more than £3,300 has been pledged to help the family, with Emma saying that the money could go towards purchasing a wheelchair or for improvements to their Musselburgh home, such as creating a wet room bathroom.

Emma, 40, told the Courier on Monday: “I’m absolutely blown away.

“I am overwhelmed and just totally grateful.

“I get upset sometimes and somebody today has donated £1,000; an anonymous donor. It is just amazing the kindness that people have shown.

“Not just that but other people have stood up for him.

“A guy donated a limited edition Rangers top and he had somebody donating him a Rangers picture.”

Musselburgh Windsor FC, where older sister Nicole plays, have donated a strip as well.

Meanwhile, friends of S4 pupil Aidan, who plays rugby for the secondary school, have also been busy. A number of them have shaved their heads in support, while Dylan Bell, guidance teacher at the school, has followed suit.

Gavin Clark, headteacher at Preston Lodge High School, said: “We were all shocked to hear the news about Aidan, and we wish him all the best in the weeks and months to come.

“PL’s thoughts are, of course, also with his family and friends at this hugely difficult time.”
