DAYS are lengthening but it’s still a very dark time of year – not just literally but metaphorically. It can be a long month financially, and in so many other ways. The coronavirus lockdown has simply worsened it. Whilst the arrival of snow has been exciting for many, especially youngsters, for others it and the slush that follows can be dangerous or debilitating.

It’s a real strain and is why seeking help and looking out for others is essential. Seeking help’s no shame and checking on friends and neighbours is vital. Let’s help each other get through this.

In Parliament, the calamity that’s Brexit continues. It’s not just lorries stuck at ports but packages in the post. There’s red tape for one and VAT issues for the other. So much for the brave new world we were promised.

But new trade deals need struck now we’re out of the EU, and in them lies danger. Many countries will seek to take advantage, not least the USA. The outgoing US commerce secretary, Wilbur Ross, who I once had the misfortune to dine with, described Brexit as an opportunity “to eat the UK’s lunch”. It’s why a debate last week was so important and the failure of the Tories to support amendments made by the House of Lords is so dangerous.

I’m no supporter of the unelected Lords and Ladies but their plans to ensure scrutiny by Parliament, protect food, animal welfare and agriculture standards, as well as protect the NHS from privatisation in future trade deals were correct.

The USA will seek access to the UK for cheap food, threatening our producers as well as undermining standards we believe in. Similarly, whilst outright privatisation of the NHS won’t be allowed, a hollowing out will be sought in access for pharmaceuticals and into other core areas.

Those amendments were rejected by the Tories. Brexit was bad; sadly, what’s coming is worse.
