EAST Lothian’s seven-day positive Covid-19 rate per 100,000 of population is under 100 for the first time in several weeks but the death rate continues to increase, with four recorded in three days.

The latest data from Public Health Scotland shows that the county’s case figures have continued to go in a downward direction but the number of deaths has went up.

So what are the latest coronavirus figures for East Lothian after the weekend and where do they stand in comparison to the rest of Scotland?

Here is the latest data explained:

Cases

The latest data shows that between January 14 and 20, East Lothian recorded 118 positive cases, which gave it a seven-day positive rate per 100,000 of the population of 110.2.

On Sunday (Jan 15-21), this had decreased to 111 cases and a seven-day positive rate per 100,000 of the population of 103.7.

Today (Monday) between January 16 and 22 the figures stand at 104 cases and a seven-day positive rate per 100,000 of the population of 97.1.

The seven-day positive figure was last under 100 on December 6.

These recent figures are considerably lower than the 120 positive cases and seven-day positive rate per 100,000 of the population of 112.1 recorded on Friday.

Deaths

Two further deaths from Covid-19 have been recorded in East Lothian over the past week.

This is in addition to the five deaths recorded the week previously.

One death was recorded on January 18 and one on January 21.

This is in addition to two on January 16 and one on each January 4, 6, 13, 14 and 17.

This brings East Lothian’s death toll for the month and year so far to nine.

By comparison, five deaths were recorded in East Lothian in the whole month of December.

The is the highest monthly death toll in East Lothian since the first wave of the pandemic last spring.

How do the latest figures compare?

East Lothian’s figures remain the lowest in the Lothian health board area and are one of only five local authority areas in Scotland with a seven-day positive rate per 100,000 of the population less than 100.

Edinburgh’s seven-day positive rate per 100,000 of the population is sitting at 111.3, Midlothian’s at 129.8 and West Lothian’s at 136.5.

When compared to the rest of Scotland, East Lothian’s figures remain fifth lowest in Scotland.

Areas of concern

Four parts of East Lothian are listed as areas of concern, all recording a seven-day positive rate between 200 and 399. This is one more than Friday.

They are:

  • Cockenzie (12 cases)
  • Musselburgh North (11 cases)
  • Ormiston (seven cases)
  • Tranent South (13 cases)

Six places recorded a seven-day positive rate between 100 and 199, down three from Friday. This list now includes:

  • Longniddry and Aberlady (six cases)
  • Musselburgh East (six cases)
  • Musselburgh West (three cases)
  • North Berwick South (five cases)
  • Pinkie Braes (three cases)
  • Tranent North (11 cases)

At the other end of the scale, nine places recorded fewer than two cases each. On this list is:

  • Dunbar East
  • Dunbar West
  • East Linton and Rural
  • Gullane and Drem
  • Haddington North
  • Haddington South
  • Musselburgh South
  • Prestonpans East
  • North Berwick North

The rest of the county (Haddington Rural, Prestonpans West and Wallyford/Whitecraig) recorded a seven-day positive rate per 100,000 of the population between 50 and 99.

Scotland’s latest figures

Across Scotland today, a total of 752 positive cases of the virus were recorded, representing 8.6 per cent of all tests carried out yesterday.

A total of 2,016 people are currently in hospital, 37 fewer than Friday, and 151 are in intensive care, 10 fewer than Friday.

Sadly, a further four deaths were recorded among those who had previously tested positive.

A total of 415,402 people have received their first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, up 56,948 from Friday, and 5,538 people have received their second dose, an increase of 849 in the same time.
