YOUNGSTERS learning from home are being urged to sign up to an exercise challenge to support a Scottish rugby legend.

Preston Lodge High School has signed up to the Doddie Aid challenge.

The mass participation exercise event is running throughout January, with money going to the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.

Set up by former Scotland lock Doddie Weir, the charity aims to raise funds to aid research into the causes of Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and investigate potential cures, while making grants to individuals with MND to enable them to live as fulfilled a life as possible.

Weir, 50, announced he had been diagnosed with MND in 2017 and launched My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.

The exercise challenge is split into five teams – The South, Edinburgh, Glasgow, North and Midlands, and Scottish Exiles.

All exercise, whether it is walking, running, skiing or sailing, is logged into the team’s district.

Chris Thomas, from the Prestonpans secondary school’s PE department, encouraged people to sign up.

He said: “With the school closed and the laptops open, it’s important for us all to keep an eye on our health and wellbeing.

“Thirty minutes a day moderate exercise is the absolute minimum that we should be doing to keep ourselves healthy.

“With that in mind, we have decided to enter PLHS into ‘Doddie Aid’!

“It’s a simple concept, but we hope it will provide a little extra motivation to get outside and do some kind of exercise.

“It doesn’t need to be running, it can be walking, cycling, dog walking, golf, anything!

“We have been entered into ‘Team South’ in a competition against the other regions of Scotland and the Scottish Exiles around the world.”
