THE number of Covid-19 cases identified in East Lothian continues to decline sharply.

However, one death from coronavirus was recorded in the county this week.

The latest figures, published by Public Health Scotland today, show that between January 6 and 12 a total of 111 positive cases were recorded, 4.8 per cent of all tests carried out. This is less than half of the test positivity rate for the whole of Scotland.

During this time, the seven-day positive rate per 100,000 of the population was 103.7.

This is less than the 118 cases and seven-day positive rate of 110.2 recorded yesterday (Thursday).

This keeps East Lothian’s figures at their lowest in more than a month.

However, one death was recorded in East Lothian on Wednesday (January 13).

Infection levels in the county  remain the lowest in the Lothian health board area and the fifth lowest in Scotland, lower than the Highlands and Moray.

By comparison, Edinburgh’s seven-day positive rate per 100,00 people was 175.5, Midlothian’s127.6 and West Lothian’s at 153.5; all are also a decrease compared to the figures announced yesterday.

In East Lothian, Musselburgh West, Musselburgh North and Haddington Rural remain areas of concern with seven-day positive rates between 200 and 399. Each recorded six, 10 and 13 cases respectively.

However, joining them on this list today is Tranent North, in the seven days up to January 12 it recorded 15 positive cases, the highest number in East Lothian, giving it a seven-day positive rate between 200 and 399.

The list of places with a seven-day positive rate between 100 and 199 has decreased from nine to seven. It now consists of: Wallyford/Whitecraig (nine cases), Pinkie Braes (four cases), Prestonpans East (five cases), Ormiston (three cases), Cockenzie (eight cases), Gullane and Drem (five cases) and North Berwick South (six cases).

For a number of days Gullane and Drem was at the other end of the scale with no more than two cases, but due to this increase in cases it has moved up the list.

At the other end of the scale, Longniddry and Aberlady, North Berwick North and Dunbar West continue to record no more than two cases each. Joining them today is East Linton and Rural.

Dunbar East was also on this list for several days but due to a increase in cases, joins Musselburgh South, Musselburgh East, Tranent South, Prestonpans West, Haddington North and Haddington South with a seven-day positive rate between 50 and 99.

Across Scotland today, 2,160 new cases were recorded, which represents 7.5 per cent of all tests carried out yesterday.

A total of 61 deaths were recorded among those who had previously tested positive.

The number of people in hospital with recently confirmed Covid-19 increased by 31 over the past 24 hours to 1,860.

The number of people in intensive care decreased by one to 141.

A total of 224,840 have now received their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccination, an increase of 16,633 from yesterday. A total of 3,331 have received their second dose, an increase of 141 from yesterday.
