A MUSICIAN from Musselburgh who was caught up in the terrorist attack in Austria has told how he hid in the basement of a bar.

Four people were shot dead in the attack in Vienna on Monday before the suspected gunman was also killed.

Callum Beattie told STV News that he had to hide in a basement in the Austrian capital, where more than 20 people were injured.

He said: “I got messages saying what had happened.

“Before you knew it, there were just hundreds of sirens non-stop for hours.

“I told the barman what was going on and quickly we all turned the lights out and went into the basement. We basically slept in there for the night.

“It was pretty scary stuff, to be honest with you, but it was all we could do.”

The singer-songwriter, who previously performed at Musselburgh’s Riding of the Marches, released his debut album People Like Us earlier this year.

In the television interview, the singer said how he ran back to his hotel in the early hours of the morning.

He said: “It was hard to get a reception down there as well, so we kept taking turns to go up and check the news on our phones to see.

“My manager was sending me messages from the UK and what they were getting told. We just had to take it from there basically.

“I stayed until about 4am or 5am and then legged it back to my hotel.

“Even then, I don’t think it was quite safe to do that.

“I was not terrified, to be honest with you, I was more angry.

“It is not something we should have in our society; I don’t think we should have to live with these sort of things.

“Everyone was a bit shaken.

“I was speaking to the lady at my hotel and she was saying she had not experienced anything like this in years.

“You just don’t understand why it was Vienna.”
