THE 2020/2021 senior team at Preston Lodge High School is determined that all students feel “included”, its members have said.

And headteacher Gavin Clark is pleased to see they have made a “brisk start” to their work.

The senior team this year are: head students Becca Hunter and Mhairi Jamieson; and deputes Roma Aitken, Matthew Costello, Gregor Thomson and Rachel White.

Speaking to the Courier, Becca and Mhairi explained the process that saw them being chosen as senior team members.

Becca, 16, said: “Students nominate who they want to be on the team and then you can put down if you want to be involved.

“Then you go through hustings – you have to do a speech about why you think you’d be a good part of the team.”

Following this, 12 nominees were interviewed by Gavin and deputy head Julia Robertson, who then selected the final senior team members.

Both head pupils were delighted by their success.

Mhairi, 17, said: “We’ve both always wanted to do it because we always looked up to the head students.

“We’ve already created a prefect rota and we’re using the prefects to make sure that everyone’s behaving but also to make sure there’s no-one walking about on their own, and everyone feels included.”

And Becca, who would like to study music at university, said they were glad to be back at school.

“It’s nice to be back and seeing everyone again, and seeing the teachers,” she said. “It is a bit weird having to walk about with a mask on. Obviously we’re not used to that but it’s just something we’ll have to get used to because I think it’s going to be like this for quite a while.”

In a newsletter to parents and carers, Mr Clark said: “We were so lucky to have so many capable young men and women putting themselves forward this year.

“We are really pleased that the senior team have made a brisk start to their work, and have already set up a prefect system, which sees around 50 of our S6 students supporting the good management of students in and around the building.

“An impressive start, with strong student leadership already making a positive difference to our school.”
