TWO benches have been installed at the War Memorial Garden in North Berwick in memory of a member of the town’s pipe band who died last year.

North Berwick Pipe Band installed the benches in conjunction with East Lothian Council for late member Malcolm Foster, a drummer and tutor with the band.

The North Berwick resident died peacefully on July 3 last year at the Edington Hospital.

He was well known in the town and a long-standing and very regular member of the pipe band, as well as a keen table tennis player and Mini car enthusiast.

Eddie Clark, secretary of North Berwick Pipe Band, said: “His death was a huge loss.

“We wanted to mark his absence from the band and we hope the benches reflect that.

“They have been used by members of the public already.”

The band’s usual performances opposite the garden in the Lodge Grounds every Wednesday evening during July and August have not been able to take place this year due to Covid-19 restrictions.

However, band members have been practising outdoors when the weather has been kind.

A band piper also played on August 15 to mark the 75th anniversary of VJ Day.
