A £1 MILLION extension to a primary school has been given the go-ahead.

East Lothian Council has set the seven-figure sum aside for St Gabriel’s RC Primary School in Prestonpans to cope with an expected increase in school roll.

Two new classrooms, including a new primary one classroom, will be added to the building, on the town’s South Grange Avenue.

The school has been extended several times since it first opened its doors in 1967.

Currently, the school has a roll of nearly 210, including the nursery, with that figure expected to increase in the coming years.

The school has seven open plan classrooms, with two nursery playrooms and other facilities.

The approved development will see the nursery expanded as well, with a new external canopy.

Prestonpans Community Council did not comment on the proposals, which attracted no comments from members of the public.

According to the planning officer’s report, the proposals “would be of an acceptable design and scale and would not appear out of character” for the area.

The planning officer said: “The proposed extensions would be well contained within the school grounds and would be seen in the context of the existing school building, and in the context of the greater height and massing of parts of that building.

“In this context, the proposed extensions would be appropriate to their surroundings and would not be out of keeping with the character and appearance of the existing school building to which they would be attached, or the character and appearance of the wider area.

“By virtue of their size, height, scale, massing, proportions, form, external finishes and positioning, the proposed extensions would not appear as a harmfully dominant or incongruous addition to the existing school building.

“They would not constitute an overdevelopment of the site.”
