PLANS have been lodged for a sports pavilion and car park to the west of Law Primary School.

An application was submitted to East Lothian Council by Sandy Ford, from Ford Design Ltd, on behalf of Hadden Construction, which has a contract with the council to produce the building.

The sports pavilion will be built on land west of Law Primary School near Dall Hallow and Pilgrims Way, both streets in the new Cala Homes development, and north-west of an existing play area.

It is believed that the building will be named after Pilmar Smith, the ‘unofficial mayor’ of the town.

The pavilion will be available for use by clubs and schools in the town.

Asked who would use the pavilion, Jim Goodfellow, local ward councillor, said: “All local sporting infrastructure is prioritised for local clubs and schools within the cluster area – so, North Berwick Colts [North Berwick FC], North Berwick Rugby Club and local schools.”

Plans show the pavilion building to be 12 metres by 13 metres in size.

Inside, the clubroom measures just over 30 square metres, with two doors that lead onto two small halls, each hall containing five doors.

The proposed plans for the pavilion show that it would be suitable for disabled people and wheelchair users, with a ramp for easy access and an accessible toilet.

Outside, the pavilion building, if approved, will be surrounded by paving, and north-west of the building will be two shelters for bike storage.

Land south west of the building is proposed for a car park with 17 spaces.

Between the car park and the pavilion building will be a path 1.2 metres wide, for wheelchair access. There is also dedicated car park spaces for wheelchair users.

A previous report to East Lothian Council, by its head of infrastructure, said the £570,000 contract for the new pavilion had been awarded to Hadden Construction.

The report added: “As a result of the growing population in North Berwick created by the housing development in the area, there is a need for additional children’s play areas and sports play facilities at Mains Farm.

“The council’s amenity services department installed a new play park and constructed a full size grass rugby/football pitch in 2018.

“The Section 75 funds that are remaining after funding the play park and pitch will fund the construction of a new sports pavilion, which will be located adjacent to the new pitch.

“The pavilion will provide two changing rooms with showers, two official changing and shower rooms, a club room and associated circulation space, toilets and store room.”

If the planning application is approced, work could start on site next month and be completed by early next year. A spokesperson for East Lothian Council said: “Whilst we may see a start on site in July, ongoing restrictions mean the construction period will likely extend beyond February 2021.

“An updated programme of works is being prepared.”

Pilmar Smith, former chairman of Lothian Buses and vice chairman of Heart of Midlothian FC, was a well-known and loved character in North Berwick, where he lived. He died in November 2018, aged 87.
