RECYCLING centres opened in East Lothian today with a steady stream of visitors heading to them.

East Lothian Council said its four centres in Dunbar, North Berwick, Macmerry and Kinwegar at Wallyford reopened as planned with social distancing and safety measures in place.

People using the centres had to provide proof they live in the county and were asked to bring a maximum of five standard sized refuse sacks filled only with garden waste, domestic waste and small electrical items.

A council spokesperson said the sites were busy but the traffic management systems in place were working well to avoid delays.

They said: "We would remind residents that the sites are only initially able to accept a maximum of five standard sized refuse sacks with garden waste or normal domestic waste and small electrical items for disposal per vehicle.

"This is strictly a temporary measure put in place for everyone’s benefit to ensure that vehicles can unload quickly, reducing queues and waiting times for everyone else, and will be relaxed after the initial expected high demand to access the centres reduces.

"The safety of both staff and site users remains our top priority.

"We are grateful to recycling centre users for their understanding and would like to thank for our Waste Services teams for their hard work in getting the sites back up and running in line with the latest Scottish Government advice."
