PEOPLE who are burning garden waste in bonfires are being urged to stop amid fears it will harm people with breathing problems.

East Lothian Council has appealed to people not to get rid of garden waste, which is currently not being collected, in garden bonfires.

They have warned the bonfires can cause pollution and affect people’s health, particularly those with respiratory problems.

Environment spokesperson Councillor Norman Hampshire said: “We appreciate the temporary suspension of the brown bin garden waste service to prioritise other essential waste collections poses some difficulties but are encouraging local residents to consider home composting or reducing the frequency of grass cutting to minimise waste until the collections resume.”

“Burning garden green waste in bonfires can result in considerable air pollution and pose a risk to people’s health.

“Environmental health officers will follow up any bonfire complaints but we’re asking for your help and patience during this challenging time.”
