AIR BnB operators are being warned they face action if they continue to allow people to book their properties for holidays during the coronavirus crisis.

Concerns that some owners of the popular holiday alternatives are continuing to take bookings have been raised after an investigation revealed several were happy to carry on as normal.

Now East Lothian Council has reminded those in the popular coastal communities not to be tempted particularly over the Easter weekend.

A spokesperson for East Lothian Council said: “While the number of Air BnBs in East Lothian is fairly small, we would urge anyone who does operate this type of business not to rent properties out where it is inappropriate – particularly over the Easter weekend.

“At the moment, Government guidance is for people to stay at home and not to travel so we would actively discourage anyone from taking a break away from home at Easter.

“We do understand that there are some instances where properties are being rented to frontline workers who are having to isolate themselves from vulnerable family members and this of course is acceptable.

“But no property should be rented at this time to holiday-makers. We understand that platforms such as Air B&B and Booking.com are actively encouraging partners to follow this advice and there is some support available for businesses affected by cancellations, summarised on the Visit Scotland website. ”

Councillor Stuart Currie, SNP Group leader, added his warning to people not to travel to East Lothian on holiday.

He said: “ I am sure that any AirBnB owner will not allow the use of any property for holiday use. Indeed to do so would be in breach of the emergency legislation which has seen hotels and bed and breakfast business required to close, all of which is aimed at preventing spread.

"This virus does not move on its own. It is moved by people. That means that holiday makers should not come to East Lothian during this emergency and it would be irresponsible for any AirBnB owner to allow their property to be used for this purpose.”
