NORTH Berwick Golf Club has awarded county golfing legend Catriona Matthew honorary life membership.

They gave Catriona, who is from the town, the membership in celebration of her victorious Solheim Cup captaincy at this year’s competition, which was held at Gleneagles in September.

Stuart Martin, golf operations manager at North Berwick Golf Club, said: “The club was absolutely delighted when she was given the [Solheim Cup] captaincy.

“Everyone was delighted for her when she won the Solheim Cup, especially since she has been related to North Berwick Golf Club for so many years.

“Giving her the honorary life membership was a no-brainer – everyone was delighted for it to go through.”

Catriona has been a member of North Berwick Golf Club since 1981, when she was just 12 years old.

On Catriona’s reaction to being given the honorary life membership, Stuart added: “She was just delighted and thanked everyone for being there.

“She talked a little bit about her history growing up playing on the West Links, which led to her going on to do bigger and better things on the European Tour and her experience at the Solheim Cup.”

The club also announced it was renaming its East Lounge, located on the top floor of the clubhouse, the Catriona Matthew Lounge.

Mr Martin added: “She was a little bit shocked to hear we were renaming the lounge after her.

“She’s quite a private person and keeps herself to herself but she was delighted to receive both of these recognitions.”
