A MUSSELBURGH man who was killed in a road crash on the A1 in Northumberland on Monday has been named by police as Bahati Masuka.

Shortly after 1.45am, police received a report of a two-vehicle crash between a car and a van near Belford.

It was reported that a Nissan Qashqai, being driven by Mr Masuka, 45, was travelling on the northbound carriageway when, for reasons yet to be established, it collided with a Vauxhall Vivaro van travelling south.

Emergency services attended but Mr Masuka was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 52-year-old driver of the other vehicle was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Sergeant Ray Lowery, of Northumbria Police’s Motor Patrols Department, said: "This was a very serious incident which has resulted in the tragic death of one man and another seriously injured.

"We have specialist officers supporting Bahati’s family during this very difficult time.

"We would continue to ask anyone who witnessed the collision to get in touch with police, especially if you have any useful dash-cam footage."
