SCAMMERS threatened an elderly woman that she would be arrested if she did not pay them money.
On Wednesday, police were called to the Post Office on Prestonpans High Street after it was reported that a 79-year-old woman had been the victim of a financial scam.
The elderly woman had previously been contacted by phone from men claiming to be employees of HMRC and police stating that she owed money to them.
The scammers used tactics including threatening the woman with being arrested if she failed to pay and claiming that the case was subject to a live court order, causing significant stress to the victim.
This led to a large initial payment being made and a further request for funds from the scammers.
Vigilant staff managed to successfully intercept the second attempted transaction and reported the circumstances to police.
Enquiries are ongoing.
