BUSINESSES in North Berwick are being urged to join a scheme which offers visitors to the town the use of their toilet.

The nearest public toilets to the town centre are located at the entrance to the Imperial Car Park, off Quality Street.

However, anyone at the other end of High Street, particularly those heading to the town’s train station, have nowhere to ‘spend a penny’.

Now, North Berwick Coastal Area Partnership’s ‘On the Move group’ has launched an initiative to encourage businesses on High Street and surrounding roads to make their facilities available.

Premises can display a sign (see right) that simply says: “You’re welcome to use our toilet.”

Hilary Smith, chairwoman of the On The Move group, was hopeful businesses would sign up to the scheme.

She said: “We are delighted at the support local businesses have offered to this initiative.

“The lack of toilets at our train station has been a long-running concern. We have not taken our eye off that problem, but this project ensures that people won’t get caught short!”

One of those signing up to the scheme is the town’s Westgate Gallery.

Roy Symon, from the business, said: “We are very pleased to share our facilities and place a sign in our window.

“We want to help our visitors feel welcome and enjoy what beautiful North Berwick has to offer.”
