HADDINGTON’S swimming pool is set to close for nine weeks for a refurbishment.

The pool and health suite at the town’s Aubigny Sports Centre is due to shut in April to allow operators enjoyleisure to update the pool hall, which dates back to the 1970s.

Essential maintenance and interior décor works will be carried out at the sports centre, off Mill Wynd.

Bill Axon, enjoyleisure general manager, said: “We are delighted to be working with our partners, East Lothian Council, to bring to fruition the upgrade of the pool hall at Aubigny Sports Centre for the benefit of our customers.

“In a coastal county such as ours, being able to swim is a key life skill, as well as delivering numerous health and wellbeing benefits.

“As East Lothian’s charitable sports provider, enjoyleisure is delighted to offer swimming opportunities across the county.

“In order to deliver on our aim to inspire active communities, we realise our facilities have to be as inviting as possible. This refurbishment will truly revitalise the swimming pool within Haddington for the benefit of all.”

One of East Lothian’s original sports facilities, ‘Haddington Swimming Pool’, as it was first known, opened in September 1974.

The much-loved site consists of a four-lane swimming pool and East Lothian’s only dedicated infant pool.

Currently, the facility welcomes about 1,400 bathers to the pool each week for swimming lessons, AquaFit classes, swimming club training, school and public use.

enjoyleisure, which operates leisure centres in the county on behalf of the council, is working on plans to give the pool hall a facelift from its existing 1970s facade.

Currently, the work is scheduled to take place over a nine-week period from April 23.

The refurbishment plans include the complete replacement of custom-fit ceiling window panels and a new roof covering.

Inside the pool hall, following a complete drain of both pools, a light and bright ceiling covering will replace the outdated wood cladding.

A new energy-efficient lighting scheme will be fitted which it is hoped will transform the look and feel of the facility.

Existing wall tiles will be replaced with wall liner panels to complete the new look.

While the pool and health suite will close for the work to take place, the rest of the centre, including the gym, dance studio, sports hall and cafe, will remain open.
