A VILLAGE’S primary school and nursery has received a positive report from education experts.

Parents of youngsters at Elphinstone Primary School and Nursery Class received a letter this week from Education Scotland and the Care Inspectorate following an inspection visit in September.

The letter outlined a number of strengths at the school, as well as areas to improve.

Fiona Robertson, head of education at East Lothian Council, told the Courier: “We are pleased that inspectors from both agencies recognise the positive difference that nursery and primary school staff are making for the children and their families in Elphinstone.

“They considered leadership, learning, attainment and wellbeing amongst other areas and concluded that the school was good across these quality indicators.

“I’m especially pleased to see Alison Cameron receive recognition for her leadership and direction so early in her time as headteacher of the school.

“I know that she and the staff team will continue to put pupils’ learning at the heart of all they do.

“I’d also like to recognise Heather Williams’ work in laying the foundations for this positive outcome during her time at Elphinstone.”

The letter noted strengths in the school’s work, including kind and articulate children who make the most of their learning, and the warm, inclusive ethos that creates a family feel.

No further inspections are planned, with the school urged to “develop a strategic, joined-up approach to self-evaluation to ensure that all children can achieve the best possible outcomes” and to continue to develop the curriculum.

Councillor Shamin Akhtar, cabinet spokeswoman for education, echoed the comments of Mrs Robertson regarding the school’s former and current headteacher.

She said: “The inspection recognised a number of areas such as the positive relationships across the nursery and school which are making a difference for children and families.

“They also commented that children were making the most of their learning and were provided with real leadership opportunities at the school.”
