A MECHANICAL fault has been blamed for Dunbar Leisure Pool being closed on Monday morning.

The pool, within the town’s leisure centre, did not open until 1pm, with the gym, classes and health suite open as normal.

A spokeswoman for enjoyleisure, which manages the leisure centre on the town's Castle Park, thanked the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service for its help.

She said: “The circulation pump, which carries the water from the pool through the filters to be heated and treated before being sent back into the pool, was overheating.

“Although there was no fire, some smoke flow had entered the building, so as a precaution the fire brigade were called and pool area remained closed to the public.

“As a result, no individual was placed at risk.

“Our engineers were called, and they have thankfully been able to resolve the issue, which enabled us to reopen the swimming pool at 1pm.

“We are incredibly thankful and grateful to the members of staff on duty at Dunbar Leisure Pool for their swift action and response.

“Our thanks also go to the fire brigade for all speedy support and assistance.”
