THERE was yet more woe for Musselburgh commuters this morning after they couldn't get on an overcrowded train.

A ScotRail spokesman said that, due to major disruption at Glasgow Central yesterday evening, there weren't the right amount of trains this morning, so the 0717 service from North Berwick (0744 from Musselburgh) had fewer carriages than usual.

As a result, many commuters were unable to board as the train was already full and were left on the platform.

Yesterday's disruption saw no trains running out of Glasgow Central’s high level due to "multiple points failures" that ScotRail said were sparked by high temperatures, creating gridlock.

Referring to the East Lothian issue this morning, the spokesman said: "We apologise to customers for the lack of carriages on this service and completely understand their frustration when these things happen.

"Anyone who arrived in Edinburgh 30 minutes or more late is entitled to compensation under our Delay Repay Guarantee. To claim, simply keep hold of your ticket and visit our website or mobile app."

Commuters have been unable to board overcrowded trains at Musselburgh a number of times over the last few years and repeated calls have been made to tackle the problem.

A public meeting was held last month, attended by ScotRail Alliance representatives, where concerns were raised that the problems experienced by rail commuters in East Lothian were not being tackled.

However, a ScotRail representative said that they expected that the "vast majority" of trains in East Lothian would be made up of six carriages by December.

As well as overcrowding, another issue experienced by commuters that was raised at that meeting was the termination of some North Berwick-bound trains at Drem when the train was running late.

The meeting also saw Phil Campbell, ScotRail Alliance's head of customers services, challenged by Councillor Colin McGinn to take a trip on a peak-time East Lothian train during next month's Edinburgh Festival Fringe to experience the problems for himself.
