CALLS are being made for a 20mph pilot scheme in one part of Cockenzie and Port Seton to be extended across the community after two children were reportedly knocked down this week.
A 10-year-old girl was taken to hospital with minor injuries after she was hit by a car on Edinburgh Road on Hallowe'en, with residents reporting that a pupil at Cockenzie Primary School was struck by a car the following day.
And at Cockenzie and Port Seton Community Council, there were calls for the restricted speed trial, which is ongoing at Whin Park, to be extended.
Members agreed to look into extending the vehicle speed restriction across the community, as well as raising the possibility of closing roads beside the primary school.
Pupils from the school also made a plea for help in their campaign to improve the safety of the road they used, the B6371, known locally as the coal road, to walk to Meadowmill Sports Centre.
In letters which were handed to the community council, pupils said they made various walks to the centre for sporting events but the road was dangerous with narrow pavements, speeding traffic and overhanging trees and bushes.
They appealed for help in improving the safety and urged drivers to take more care when using roads around the school and the centre.
