North Berwick Day Centre marked its 10th birthday at the weekend, and unveiled its new bus at the same time.

A party took place at the day centre on Saturday morning, with county Parliamentarians Fiona O’Donnell MP and Iain Gray MSP, as well as Provost Ludovic Broun-Lindsay, among those who spoke at the event.

A birthday cake had been baked for the occasion, and it was cut by Sir Hew Hamilton-Dalrymple, as he had done a decade ago to mark its opening, alongside Ella Aikman, one of the longest-serving members of the day centre.

Another long-serving member of the day centre, Bruce Farrell, joined community council chairwoman Sheila Sinclair to cut the ribbon before entering the new bus.

The bus, which cost the group £60,000 and was the subject of extensive fundraising last year, then made its first trips round the town, with everyone keen to have a ride.

And the centre was praised by the county’s Parliamentarians.

Fiona O’Donnell MP said: “I was so impressed by the day centre’s achievements over the last 10 years, including the huge fundraising effort for its new bus.

“It has gone from strength to strength over the last decade and I pay tribute to the staff, volunteers and local community for everything they have done to make it such a tremendous success.

“It provides a vital service helping local older people avoid isolation and loneliness and maintain their quality of life.

“The bus also looks fantastic, depicting all of the things that make North Berwick such a great place to live.” Meanwhile, Iain Gray MSP added: “It’s very clear that North Berwick Day Centre has been hugely successful over the last 10 years in meeting the needs of local older people living in and around the town.

“I was pleased to attend the birthday celebrations and have the chance to take a trip on its impressive new bus. All those who contributed to the fundraising can be very proud of what they achieved.

“I want to thank everyone involved in the day centre for their hard work over the last 10 years and wish all the staff and volunteers continued success for the future.”
