A FORMER child star of Cockenzie Drama Group has decribed stepping into the shoes of one of her heroes in a one-woman show as “as exciting as the first time I performed my first solo in the local panto”.

Sarah Laing, 25, has just completed a succesful run in Glasgow with her tribute to Doris Day, which explores the life of the star and features her most famous songs.

And she is currently preparing to take part in the famous Big Burns Supper, in Dumfries, at the end of the month.

But Sarah, who had her first taste of fame with the drama group, says she still remembers the first time she took to the stage with the group.

Sarah, whose mother, Fiona Laing, is from Port Seton, grew up spending time at her grandparents’ home there.

She said: “I grew up putting on little shows in their house in Port Seton, so joining the local drama group was a natural step for me to take.

“I loved how the group worked together so well and seeing the shows was always really rewarding.” Taking the role of Doris, in her show ‘The Music of Doris Day, was a dream come true for Sarah, who idolised the actress and singer since seeing her in Calamity Jane.

Sarah said: “I remember seeing Calamity Jane for the first time when I was nine and being blown away.

“I liked how quirky she was and knew that I wanted to perform like her one day – now I’m delighted to be getting the chance to do just that.” Inspired by the film, Sarah joined Cockenzie Drama Group, making it a family affair, as both her parents were also involved, and began honing her performing talent.

At the age of 13 she performed her first solo in the group’s pantomime.

Sarah said: “I am just as excited about stepping into Doris’ shoes as I was when I got to perform my first solo in the Cockenzie and Port Seaton pantomime in 2002.

“I loved working with the group, as my mum was also a member and my dad helped out backstage, so it was great thing for us to do as a family. I’ll always be grateful to the group for giving me my first solo in Babes in the Wood when I was still very young.”
