COUNTY racing starlet Paul McClung was in imperious form as he made his Thundersport GB debut earlier this week.

The Haddington ace, also a keen rugby player, was on his bike for the event at Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire, where he recorded four podium finishes.

The 20-year-old was on top of the podium in his first race of the weekend, seeing off the challenge of John Simpson to claim victory.

McClung, a former Knox Academy pupil, was delighted with his success.

He said: "P1 for a Monday morning isn't too bad.

"It was an amazing race with John [Simpson] - I gave it my all and I'm chuffed to bits to get my first race win at Thundersport GB."

The county ace was also amazed by the track at the Lincolnshire venue, adding: "The track's mega.

"I loved it from the first lap and it only got better as I got faster."

McClung was unlucky to miss out on a second race win, only narrowly losing out to Simpson in the latter stages of the race.

He added: "I ran P1 for eight-and-a-half laps, but was passed by a very fast and strong John Simpson, and just didn't have enough tire left to fight back."

The event, which had competitors racing over Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday, saw McClung produce an excellent performance after starting fourth on the grid.

He added: "Had a small problem on the bike, but it was all fixed for race two thanks to my dad.

"Race two went well from the start – I was running round in P1 for the first three laps, then I got pushed to third."

Despite his best efforts, he was unable to move any further up the field, but admitted it was "amazing" to take part in the Cadwell Park races.

McClung thanked everyone for their support, and added: "Big thanks to the team for supporting me and making everything possible and also everyone who follows me. Couldn't do it without you."
