BOWLS star Billy Mellors was “delighted” to have won the gents’ singles championship at East Lothian Indoor Bowls Club for the fourth time in five years.

Mellors, the county’s bowls development officer, was victorious 21-16 over Chris Fallen last Tuesday to overtake county legends Ian Bell and Graham Robertson on the all-time winners’ list.

Following his victory, he said: “It is a dream come true for me to become the first player to win the title four times.

“It was a scrappy game that could have gone either way so I’m delighted to have managed to get over the line.”

The additional bonus for 43-year-old Mellors is entry into the 2018/19 national singles.

Also last Tuesday evening, teenager Aaron Betts produced one of the best singles performances ever witnessed at the Alex Marshall Arena to take the gents’ junior singles title.

The 14-year-old proved too strong for former World Indoor Singles champion Joe Mower in the final and wrapped up a sensational 21-4 victory in 12 ends.

It saw Betts complete a remarkable hat-trick, adding the junior singles title to the under-13 and under-17 singles championships he won the weekend before.kend.
