MUSSELBURGH Windsor are celebrating after lifting a national trophy.

The club’s 2009 side were victorious against Gairdoch United in the final of the inspiresport Scottish Youth FA Cup Final on Sunday.

The Honest Toun club had the chance of doing the double but the 2008 side agonisingly lost out to Edinburgh City just hours later.

The two cup finals were played at the home of Airdrieonians Football Club.

Several bus loads had travelled through from East Lothian to The Penny Cars Stadium and saw the 2009 side lead 2-1 at the halfway stage.

A stoppage-time penalty sent the game to extra time but Windsor got the decisive goal to win.

Ian Gillon, coach of the 2009 team, was delighted with the success, which came after a double from Jamie Storey and a Liam Gillon strike.

He said: “This is why I do it – to give the lads experiences and memories they will never forget.

“We had two teams in the Scottish Cup final, in our 70th year.

“That is us legends now, we are immortal.

“The name will be on the cup, there will be a signed strip in the boardroom at Pinkie and that will be there forever. We’re really, really pleased.”

Later that day, Musselburgh Windsor 2008 lined up against Edinburgh City, who proved too strong in a 4-1 win.

David Steel, from the Musselburgh Windsor team, described the result as “disappointing” but was proud of his team.

He said: “The boys have been great for years.

“They are one of the most successful Windsor teams out there and it was just a game that did not quite go for us on the day, unfortunately.

“The team has had more highs than lows.”

The team have the chance to experience more highs as they battle it out for the league title and also the South East Cup, with the final on June 4.

Elsewhere, North Berwick FC also missed out on success as their under-13s lost 3-1 to Castlevale Whites in the League Cup Final on Monday.

On Sunday, Bonnyrigg Rose Astro again face a club from the Honest Toun. The Under-14 John Crawford Cup is contested at New Dundas Park when Musselburgh Windsor Blues visit.

The following day, Musselburgh Windsor Whites play Cramond Wolves in the final of the Under-15 Division 3A League Cup at New Dundas Park.

Finally, on May 22, Haddington Athletic CFC host Linton Hotspur Colts at Millfield in the final of the Under-17 Michael Moran Cup.
