HERIOT’S were crowned the winners of the Musselburgh Sevens on Saturday evening.

The tournament, which took place at Stoneyhill, saw teams from across the country take part in the seven-a-side version of the sport.

The hosts had been keen to regain their trophy after losing out in the final to Marr 12 months ago.

On Saturday, Musselburgh reached the last four with victory over Highland and were joined in the semi-finals by Gala and Watsonians – who knocked out Preston Lodge – as well as the eventual winners.

Heriot’s ran out 38-0 winners over Musselburgh in the first semi-final before Gala won 31-12 against Watsonians.

In the final, Heriot’s proved too strong for their Borders opposition and went on to lift the trophy.

Brian Jardine, Musselburgh RFC president, congratulated the winners and thanked everyone for supporting the event.

He said: “What a fantastic day was had by all.

“Although it was not the warmest of days, the people of Musselburgh certainly came out to support the event. Those that did come were rewarded with seeing some fantastic rugby.

“I thought the standard of rugby played at last year’s competition was top drawer but, in my opinion, the standard was even higher this year.

“Many of the games were closely contested but the best two teams made it through to the final and Heriot’s were well deserved winners over a spirited Gala side.

“I would like to thank everyone who helped make the tournament happen and to those who came along to support the event. I would also like to give a special thanks to the teams who attended, many of whom travelled some distance, and helped make the tournament and the day a huge success.”
