TALENTED teenage footballers have made it third time lucky after lifting a trophy in impressive style.

Lothian Colts had twice suffered cup heartache but hit Currie Star Blues for six last Sunday (April 30) to win the John McConnell Cup.

Colin Blair, head coach of the Prestonpans-based side, felt coming so close last year – when they lost on penalties to Gala Fairydean – had pushed them to go one step further this time round.

He said: “Last year was particularly hard to take.

“I always see it as a game we should never have lost.

“It finished 1-1 and it was one of those where we just could not score.

“You look back to Sunday and it was similar until later in the game and it went bang, bang, bang for a few goals.

“It was fantastic.

“We do a lot of work as volunteers and these are the sort of things you just hope you get to experience.

“A lot of guys and a lot of teams maybe never get to a cup final.

“We will have had four in three years, which is pretty good.”

The final of the under-15s cup competition was played at New Dundas Park, the home of Scottish League Two side Bonnyrigg Rose.

Lothian Colts had led 1-0 at the break and doubled their advantage before their opposition pulled a goal back.

However, Lothian Colts “really kicked into gear” and four strikes in the last 15 minutes gave the county side a comprehensive win.

Jamie Brown scored a hat-trick while Zander Wishart bagged a brace and Tyler Elder found the target.

The head coach, joined on the sidelines by coach Sandy Weir, said the team were “over the moon” with victory and could yet be celebrating once again.

A date is yet to be set for the Division Two League Cup final when Lothian Colts will tackle Leith Athletic.

Lothian Colts squad: Leon Fleming, Josh Stevenson, Joe Regan, Charlie Mann, Mackenzie Deevoy, Ben Weir, Jamie Brown, Andrew Blair, Tyler Elder, Noah Craigie, Lewis Corner and Zander Wishart.
