EDINBURGH Rugby’s Cameron Hutchison, who grew up in “rugby-mad” North Berwick, has signed for Newcastle Falcons.

The 24-year-old will move south of the Border after swapping Edinburgh for the Kingston Park side on a two-year-deal.

Hutchison made 21 appearances for the Capital club, including scoring a decisive try in their Heineken Champions Cup victory away to Castres in January.

But it has been confirmed that his future lies away from DAM Health Stadium as one of 13 players departing the club.

Now, he has put pen to paper on a deal with the Premiership side.

Hutchison said: “It’s a really exciting opportunity to play in the Gallagher Premiership and it’s a new challenge for me after playing in the URC with Edinburgh.

“It’s a league I’ve always followed and watched over the years, and with Newcastle being so close to the Scottish Border, it’s almost a home from home.

“I can stay connected with family, and my parents actually used to live in Newcastle as well as my brother going to uni there, so it’s a place I’ve already got an affinity with.”

Born in Birmingham, Hutchison attended North Berwick High School and captained Scotland under-19s.

Going on to shine for Scotland under-20s, he spent a season with French club Stade Niçois before scoring on his Edinburgh debut against Ulster in 2021.

“I was born in England but moved up to Scotland when I was two, when the family relocated to North Berwick,” he told the Falcons’ website.

“It’s a lovely spot and it’s a rugby-mad town, so that was a great place to be brought up.

“I went to school there and had my last two years at Heriot’s before joining Edinburgh’s academy, having a year out in France and then coming back to take up a pro contract with Edinburgh, but I’ve now got this new challenge with Newcastle which I’m really looking forward to.”

The new signing described himself as a “direct and physical” player and vowed to get his “head down and try to graft for the team”.

The move is actually a few years in the making, with Falcons having spotted his talent while he played for Heriot’s.

Hutchison will be joined at Newcastle by Edinburgh team-mate Murray McCallum and will work under incoming head coach Alex Codling.

Mark Laycock, interim head coach, said: “Cammy has been on our radar for quite a while, from when he was back playing for Heriot’s.

“He’s a strong, physical ball-carrier who is a really good gain-line option, and he’s clearly been developing his distribution skills.

“He’ll give us a good foundation, his core skills are strong and he just offers us that gain-line threat to get us going forward as a team.”
