MUSSELBURGH are out to make it a hat-trick of sevens titles and regain their Musselburgh Sevens crown.

Clubs from the length and breadth of the country will head to the Honest Toun on Saturday for the hotly anticipated event.

Gates open at noon, with the first game getting under way at 1pm and the final due to kick off at about 5.30pm.

A spokesperson for the club told Courier Sport how they were looking forward to the event.

They said: “We’ve got ourselves and other East Lothian teams in Haddington, Preston Lodge, Dunbar and North Berwick.

“We have got other teams from all over, including Heriot’s, Currie, Watsonians, Highland are coming from Inverness, we have got Berwick, Edinburgh Accies, Gala, Peebles, Murrayfield Wanderers and Selkirk.

“It is a huge occasion for the entire club.

“It is one of the most looked-forward-to events of the year, especially being slap bang in the middle of the sevens season.

“Our boys have won two tournaments already – the Portobello Sevens and the North Berwick Sevens – and they came very close to winning the Musselburgh Sevens last year, just losing in the final to Marr.

“We will be looking to regain it this year.”

A disco is held in the clubhouse following the final.

Brian Jardine, club president, said: “Musselburgh are delighted to be hosting their annual sevens tournament this week.

“This year’s tournament should be well contested, with the East Lothian teams facing strong competition with teams coming from all over, including Highland making the trip down from Inverness.

“There are no major sevens tournaments on in the area as a result, all the teams attending are sending their first seven.

“Although we have won a couple of local events recently, the boys will have their work cut out to win their own tournament.

“We are praying for some hot weather but the spectators attending should expect to see some quality rugby.”
