THE county’s finest young swimmers from East Lothian Swim Team (ELST) were in action at the prestigious Edinburgh International Swim Meet at the weekend, held at the city’s Royal Commonwealth Pool.

The meet attracted the very best swimmers from across the United Kingdom and from all over Europe and beyond.

Swimmers competing included Team GB gold medallists from the Tokyo Olympics Kathleen Dawson, Tom Dean, Adam Peaty and Duncan Scott.

Twelve swimmers from ELST qualified for the competition, a great achievement given the quality of swimmers involved.

Three of those swimmers went on to qualify for finals in the juniors (under-17s) category: Tegan Black (200m breaststroke), Zara Krawiec (200m butterfly and 400m individual medley (IM)) and Zach Slater (100m freestyle).

Zara swam a fantastic race in the 400m IM final, taking over four seconds off her personal best to win the silver medal in a time of 5m10.74s.

Jamie Ward, ELST head coach, was delighted with all the swimmers’ efforts over the weekend.

He said: “This was a great experience for the team, rubbing shoulders with some of the very best swimmers in the world.

“It was also a great opportunity to compete long course (in a 50-metre pool) before the East District Age Groups Championships at the end of March and the Scottish National Age Group Championships in Aberdeen in April, where I am very hopeful of a strong showing from ELST.”
