TWO tries from North Berwick’s Griff Williams helped Loretto School to lift the Boys’ Under-16 National Schools Plate.

The Musselburgh school took on Linlithgow Academy at the home of Edinburgh Rugby, the DAM Health Stadium, yesterday (Wednesday).

It was the West Lothian side who enjoyed the early pressure as they had Loretto camped in their own half.

However, the county side stood firm with only a penalty from Linlithgow captain Ruairi Macleod getting on the scoreboard.

Macleod missed a second penalty before Loretto managed to get themselves into the game.

Williams was the man to do it as he crossed the whitewash for the first try of the day.

Captain Kaylen Martin added the extra points to ensure Loretto had a 7-3 lead at the interval.

Martin added a penalty after the restart to extend the advantage before Linlithgow launched a comeback.

Loosehead Cameron McHardy scored their first try of the day and the gap was down to two points.

The game would be decided by the narrowest of margins and one of those moments came when a Linlithgow penalty clipped the crossbar.

The West Lothian side did turn the game around when Alfred Muir scored a try in the corner with less than three minutes left on the clock.

Loretto were not to be denied though and pushed to the very end.

With time running out and an additional two minutes played, Williams crashed over the line for his second try and a 15-13 victory.
