EXTRA time was needed in two of the South Region Challenge Cup ties involving county teams yesterday (Saturday).

Tranent Juniors eventually overcame Haddington Athletic while Musselburgh Athletic progressed after a thriller with Gala Fairydean Rovers.

Dunbar United are also through to the next round after victory over Preston Athletic but Ormiston Primrose suffered late heartache at Stoneyburn Juniors.

At Millfield, Tranent had twice led but twice Haddington had fought back.

Martin Maughan scored after just 10 minutes but Ross King pulled Haddington level midway through the first half.

Tranent seemed to have secured their place in the next round when Nicky Reid scored from close range.

However, Haddington, who twice hit the woodwork, found another equaliser when Ali Simpson scored on 90 minutes.

In extra time, Tranent’s quality showed and substitute Craig Barr and Maughan ensured their progress.

It was also 2-2 after 90 minutes at Olivebank.,

Jackson Barker had put the hosts 1-0 up at half time before their Lowland League opposition turned the game on its head.

Two goals in the final 10 minutes had Gala on top but a stunning free-kick from Matty Knox in stoppage time took the tie to extra time.

Knox’s corner then forced an own goal before Aaron Murrell and Barker wrapped up the victory.

Dunbar and Preston had only met a few weeks ago when the Prestonpans side picked up the win.

However, it was the Seasiders on this occasion progressing as Cammy Dawson opened the scoring in the first half.

Michael McFarlane then scored twice in four minutes before Jack McKinnon gave the visitors hope.

McFarlane would wrap up his treble with 11 minutes to go to send his team through.

Finally, Ormiston Primrose were the only East Lothian team playing outside of the county.

They travelled to Stoneyburn in West Lothian and Josh Winnik’s header midway through the first half had them on top.

Stoneyburn would level from the penalty spot nine minutes after the restart and they found the winner three minutes into stoppage time.

The draw takes place at 6pm this evening (Sunday).
