HISTORY has been made as Oliver Mukherjee became the youngest ever winner of the Scottish Men’s Amateur Golf Championship.

A gruelling week came to a conclusion on Saturday at Gailes Links on the Ayrshire coast, as Mukherjee defeated Gregor Tait 1up in the final.

In the morning’s semi-finals, Gullane’s Mukherjee was a 3&2 winner over Castle Park’s Connor Wilson, while Tait beat Lewis Irvine by the same score, carding nine threes over the 16 holes.

For a long time in the final, it looked like it would not be Mukherjee’s day, finding himself three down after 10 holes and with a mountain to climb.

However, pars on 11 and 12 saw the gap reduced to one, before both players birdied the 13th.

Mukherjee, who is about to start his final year and sit his A-levels at Loretto School and Golf Academy in Musselburgh, then made it back-to-back birdies on the par-five 14th.

Tait’s putt for birdie slipped by the hole, meaning the match was level heading into the final four.

On the par-three 15th, with both players having missed the green, Mukherjee made a solid par that Tait was unable to match to take the lead for the first time in the final.

With 16 and 17 halved in pars, Mukherjee headed down the last with the advantage.

A long lag putt from Mukherjee saw the par conceded, leaving Tait a 10-foot birdie putt to take the match to extra holes.

However, he was unable to convert, meaning the youngster from Gullane was crowned this year’s winner.

The winner credited his match play excellence to playing with his brothers and family in their annual golf tournament.

He said: “We all take a lot of pride in supporting each other’s golf; however, each year we play the Mukherjee Masters and it is the most intense competition of the year!

“My twin brother Sam and I take on dad and our little brother CJ.

“When we were young, dad used to let us play the forward tees, and now we let him tee up and give him shots.

“Mum used to watch but now says we are too competitive in it.

“I think this year will be the eighth year of playing it.

“Mum has banned Monopoly too – probably a good move.”

Sam, Oliver and Cameron are members at Gullane Golf Club, Craigielaw Golf Club, The New Club of St Andrews and were made honorary members at Al Hamra Golf Club in the UAE after playing there for a winter.

They are supported by Titleist and will soon be on the lookout for sponsors.

The brother’s success rubs off on each other.

Oliver said: “After Sam led us all in winning the Valencian Championship at El Saler last October, and getting on WAGR, I was really determined to get on WAGR (World Amateur Golf Rankings) too.

“It was quite a journey with 15 Top 5s but no win and then I won The Junior Tour at Royal Dornoch in April to get WAGR and have won the Gold Medal at St Andrews and now this.

“I love playing all golf events, especially the Stephen Gallacher ones, and the R&A events are a different level all together.

“Cameron, my little brother is the current Scottish under-14 champion and got his WAGR two weeks ago by getting the final of the under-18 Scottish Golf Boys Matchplay.

“We are really close and spur each other on every day.”
