HADDINGTON Athletic Colts hailed an almost perfect weekend as two of their youth sides returned victorious in their respective cup finals.

Three of the clubs’ sides were in action, with the U16s taking home the Jackie Faichney Cup after a thumping 5-0 victory over Dalkeith Thistle on Friday.

The boys started the game in imperious fashion, taking an early lead thanks to Cammy Mackinnon.

Haddington then started to dominate midfield and Blair Ross would add two to make it 3-0 at the half.

Dalkeith came out stronger in the second half but an incredible rear-guard action from the county side put to bed any attacking threat.

Mackinnon would kill the tie against the run of play to make it 4-0 before rounding off his hat-trick shortly afterwards to secure an incredible five-goal victory.

Colin Bowsher, youth section chairman, was thrilled with the result and the surprising manner of victory that gave retiring coach Andy Doherty the perfect send-off.

He said: “They’ve had a fantastic end to the season and have gone really well in the cup to go on and win it.

“Both sides were evenly matched, mid-table in the league, so to see them win it so well was pleasing for everybody.

“One of the coaches, Andy Doherty, was also leaving the club and it was his last match, so emotions were running high.

“It was a great way to end his tenure.”

Then on Sunday, the club hosted a double cup final header at Millfield, with the U15s Division Three squad tasting victory against Armadale 3-1.

Two quick goals from Brodie Clark and Milo Drew Thomson put them two up within six minutes before Armadale pulled a goal back before the half.

Tobie Craig added a third mid-way through the second half, ensuring a 3-1 victory.

“They’ve had a great season so far and still have a great chance of winning their league,” said Bowsher.

“They are finishing very strongly and won the game comfortably in the end.”

In the other match, Haddington U15s Division One squad fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat to Portobello CFA and coach Bowsher was proud of the boys’ efforts, having only been promoted to the division this season.

He said: “We were Division Two last year, so we just moved up to Division One.

“The boys were devastated – they had had such a good season and we were hoping to finish it off with a win, but it was not to be.”

Despite his own side’s defeat, Bowsher was delighted at the club’s achievements with what looks like a bright future ahead.

He said: “There is definitely a buzz about Haddington at the moment.

“There is a lot going on with the youth section and we have a great relationship with the senior club.

“We have also increased our girls section by double.”
