TOP-SCORER Jamie Docherty revealed he had pushed back a holiday to score a vital goal for Tranent Juniors.

The frontman had been due to head out to Palma Nova in Majorca on Friday – 24 hours before the Belters’ winner-takes-all clash with Darvel.

However, Docherty moved the flight back 48 hours and popped up with the second goal at Recreation Park, which ensured Tranent were promoted to the Scottish Lowland Football League.

He told Courier Sport: “I had to change the flight as soon as we won the league.

“I was due to be away on May 27 but moved it to May 29 and I am glad that I did.

“I had booked it a while back and did not think we would still be playing this late.

“We won the league and I knew if we won it then there would be a play-off game on May 28.”

Thankfully, the 22-year-old (pictured) was able to make the trip with his girlfriend with a spring in his step after the team reached the fifth tier of Scottish football’s pyramid for the first time.

Docherty has been a key player throughout the campaign for Calum Elliot’s team, scoring 23 goals.

Five of those have come in recent weeks, each proving crucial in the club’s bid for promotion.

Tranent were 2-1 down in a midweek clash against title challengers Linlithgow Rose when Docherty kept his cool from the penalty spot in stoppage time.

Less than a fortnight later and the former St Johnstone and Livingston youngster found the target against the same opposition in a 3-3 draw in West Lothian.

He then scored from the penalty spot against Jeanfield Swifts as Tranent pipped Penicuik Athletic to the East of Scotland Football League (EoSFL) Premier Division title on goal difference on the last day of the season.

A strike against South of Scotland Football League winners St Cuthbert Wanderers helped set up the vital game with West of Scotland Football League champions Darvel, and Docherty was on target once again.

He said: “Shaun Rutherford [a Tranent team-mate] always says to me I am a big game player. It is just what I do and it paid off.

“I had been in good form and just picked the ball up for the penalty against Linlithgow and knew I was going to score.”

The Edinburgh-based frontman described the experience of winning the league as “amazing” and said “nobody expected us to do it”.

He added: “We knew we had a good enough squad to do it.

“We just knew if we played our game then we were confident.

“Everyone thought Darvel would do it.

“After the game, the dressing room was bouncing, the tunes were on and Darvel gave us some beer.”

Speaking on Tuesday afternoon from Majorca, Docherty revealed he would be keeping an eye on the score between Tranent and Whitehill Welfare in the semi-finals of the League Cup.

A 2-0 victory saw the Belters through to Sunday’s final to play Linlithgow Rose, with Docherty confirming he would be back in time for the game at Newtongrange Star’s New Victoria Park.

He said: “I will be keeping an eye out tonight and checking Twitter for updates – fingers crossed!”
