AN HISTORIC run which dates back more than 60 years returns to the athletics calendar on Saturday (May 7).

The Edinburgh to North Berwick race was first run in 1958 and returns after a four-year absence.

About 200 runners are expected to set off from Portobello promenade at 9.45am, with the leaders expected to finish at North Berwick’s West Beach by about 11.30am.

The trophy for the race winner – presented by North Berwick Town Council in 1960 – had been lost for many years, but was discovered earlier this year.

However, there will also be new silverware up for grabs.

Thirty per cent of this year’s entrants are female and organisers felt it was time for there to be a trophy for the female winner as well.

Margaret Robertson, of Dundee – a friend and neighbour of the race organiser Alan Lawson – has put up a new trophy to be competed for.

Places are still available; entries close after today (Monday).
