THE county’s finest young swimmers from East Lothian Swim Team (ELST) were in action at the prestigious Edinburgh International Swim Meet at the Royal Commonwealth Pool at the weekend.

The meet attracted the best swimmers from across the UK and from as far afield as Spain and Israel.

Athletes competing included Team GB gold medallists from the Tokyo Olympics Kathleen Dawson, Tom Dean, James Guy, Anna Hopkin, Matt Richards and Duncan Scott.

Eighteen swimmers from ELST qualified for the meet.

Five of them went on to qualify for finals in the Juniors category (under-17s): Tegan Black (200m breaststroke), Lauren Clark (200m butterfly), Luke Hornsey (100m breaststroke and 400m freestyle), Helen Stoddart (50m butterfly) and Louisa Stoddart (50m and 100m butterfly).

Jamie Ward, ELST head coach, was delighted with all the swimmers’ efforts.

He said: “This was a great experience for the team, rubbing shoulders with some of the very best swimmers in the world.

“It was also a great opportunity to compete long course (in a 50-metre pool) before the East District Age Groups Championships at the end of March and the Scottish National Age Group Championships in Glasgow in April, where I am very hopeful of a strong showing from ELST.”
