A JUDO group with clubs throughout East Lothian has been celebrating after scooping more than 30 medals at the Scottish National Championships.

Sportif Judo was among those competing at the championships on the weekend of November 6 and 7 at the Inverclyde Centre in Largs.

The 49-strong team from Sportif Judo topped the medal table once again with 10 gold, 11 silver and 11 bronze medals.

A spokesperson for Sportif Judo said: “This is an amazing achievement after a difficult year for everyone. The commitment, hard work and positive attitude shown by players, parents and coaches has been outstanding and paid dividends at the championships.

“Throughout lockdown, the Sportif Talent Group took part in Zoom weekly classes, outdoor conditioning classes, running programmes and interclub conditioning challenges on Zoom against clubs from Portugal and England.

“There were many outstanding performances at the Scottish Championships, with special mention to Sophie Wood, 16, a Ross High School student who won gold in her own age band under-16s and then a bronze medal in the seniors event.”

Among those representing Sportif Judo and coming from East Lothian were: Cameron McVey, 15, from North Berwick, gold medallist and Scottish champion 2021 – North Berwick High School; Josh Martin, 12, from Tranent, gold medallist and Scottish champion 2021 – Ross High School; Sam Walker, 17, from Tranent, silver medallist – Ross High School; Charlie King, 13, from Athelstaneford, silver medallist – North Berwick High School; Lois Henderson, 14, from Tranent, silver medallist – Ross High School; Aiden McNelis, 12, from Dunbar, silver medallist – Dunbar Grammar School; and Murray McConnell, 12, from Longniddry, bronze medallist – Preston Lodge High School.

Meanwhile, there was also success for the Danderhall Judo Club duo of Archie and Finlay Strang.

The brothers, from Tranent, both took gold at the event and were crowned Scottish national champions.

Sportif is now looking forward to the British Championships in Sheffield next month and hope to return with medal success to finish the 2021 season.

Sportif Judo have classes in Tranent, North Berwick and Dunbar.
